You probably know how good a nice, shady tree makes you feel: maybe you’ve gone out of your way to sit underneath one on a hot day, or maybe you’ve even secretly…hugged one. STL TreeLC, a new volunteer group partnering with Forest ReLeaf and St. Louis City Forestry, wants you to take the next step and enter into a more committed relationship with the street trees, which help reduce summer temperatures, clean pollutants from the air, and give city dwellers a daily dose of nature.
Many young trees planted in the City’s tree lawns don’t survive the first three years they need to get established due to high summer temperatures, insufficient water, and accidental damage. However, just a bit of care greatly increases the health and viability of these critical natural resources!
Taking to the streets
STL TreeLC is looking for volunteers to take to the blocks around Cherokee Street on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019. Volunteers will have the chance to mulch, weed, and inventory street trees or knock on doors to reach neighbors with the important message of ongoing street tree care. Volunteers will learn the basics of tree care at a brief training session at the start of the event. No experience or equipment is required: everything you need to make a tree happy will be provided, along with water, snacks, and snazzy “I Water STL Trees” hats while supplies last.
The August event is the first of many future community outreach activities; organizers will be available at the event and whenever mutually convenient to elaborate on the economic, environmental, and physiological services of street trees and how everyday citizens can be a part of growing a better City.
Join your fellow St. Louisans and give a little TreeLC!
